I try to establish a balance, so I'm not at extremes. When it comes to writing--or any other project--I focus on what I want to do and what I plan to achieve; either in the long or short term. If it's the long term, then I try to figure out the steps I need to take to reach that goal, and if it's the short term, I compare that to the overall picture and attempt to determine just how important it is.
♥ ali ~ I often make huge goals for myself that can very quickly become overwhelming--I've found the only way to manage these complicated tasks, including writing a book, is to break it down. Plus, it makes me feel good when I reach those milestones! How do you find balance when facing a daunting task?
The Golden Eagle is the nome-de-plume of a teenage Chinese-American girl who loves to write, read, learn, and blog, among other things. Her favorite genre to read and write is Science Fiction (and its sub-genres) with a little Fantasy to the side now and then. She has officially been writing since September of 2009, after reading a book that isn't one of her favorites; it inspired her to write something she wanted to read. Her current project is a SF/Dystopian novel about a girl, a boy, a junkyard, and the ultimate goal of a man in power to rule the planet.
Eagle keeps one of the most interesting blogs around--you can expect posts on everything from science, to books, to writing . . . just about anything that interests her! AND she manages to make all these topics interesting to her readers too (sometimes a not-so-easy task!)! You can find her blog here.

narley ninjas is a weekly feature here and at the dojo. Every Thursday I feature one of you ~ a writing ninja, training hard to become a black belt and a master of your art. If you would like to be featured, simply join the dojo with the linky tool on the dojo page, and wear a ninja badge (with a link back to me) on your own blog. Come train with us!
And, don't forget ~ there will be no #ninjachat until the 8th of September!

I'm the same, I try to break things down. I word count or scene goals and I schedule my life around my writing, making sure I add enough rest so that my brain functions properly.
ReplyDeleteI need to do this. I tend to get overwhelmed by my goals and then I compare myself to others. Big no, no. Balancing everything isn't easy, but I'm trying hard.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
She's an awesome Ninja!
ReplyDeleteGolden Eagle does have a pretty good blog!
ReplyDeleteBalance is so key and also hard to do sometimes. Nice to meet you Golden Eagle!
ReplyDeleteYay Golden! I quite enjoy her blog. I totally need to do this with my goals though. I also tend to look at the big goal and get overwhelmed by it. It's important to make small ones and keep things in perspective.
ReplyDeleteYay! I love the Golden Eagle, and I just learned more about her! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts. She is very smart for a teenager!
ReplyDeleteGolden Eagles blog is great and that's wise advice. I try and break my goals down to wordcount, but sometimes just getting 10 words down feels like a victory!
ReplyDeleteI love the advice. So great. I need to break things into bits to get through it. I'll have to check out the Golden Eagle's website. Thanks Ali!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for featuring me, Ali! :)
ReplyDeleteClarissa: I find myself moving things around writing too, sometimes. It's important.
Christine: It's hard not to compare yourself; there's always the urge to reach someone else's hurdles, particularly when the writing isn't going so well.
You're welcome! :)
Alex: Aw, thank you! But you're definitely one of THE awesome ninjas around here.
Mel: Thanks! :)
Shari: I agree.
Krispy: It can be tricky not to get overwhelmed by some goals.
Shannon: Glad you liked learning more. :)
Angie: Thank you!
Kari: Same here. Sometimes when I'm struggling with writer's block, anything seems a whole lot better than nothing . . .
Carolyn: Thanks!
Golden Eagle does have a great blog and so do you!
ReplyDeleteGot to love the Golden Eagle! And I really really really need to meditate more. Or, like, at all. Yeah.
ReplyDeleteMaeve: Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteTrisha: Same here. :P Meditation is good for you . . . but I don't do it very often, either.
